If you’re looking at wedding venues in Santa Barbara, you’ve probably already seen the usual suspects. Big estates, beach views, Spanish-style architecture, and venues that look completely different once they’re filled with flowers, candles, tables, and a very expensive-looking wedding.

So when I walked through Rockwood Women’s Club, I wanted to see what the space actually looked like before all of that. Just Rockwood exactly as it comes! I got to meet Sierra, the venue coordinator, and she told me that they only offer the space to one wedding per weekend. We love a low-stress venue without everyone rushing around trying to get in and out in a short time frame.

And honestly, I kind of love seeing a venue this way.

When you’re planning a wedding, it’s easy to look at a photo of a gorgeous tablescape and think, “Okay, I want that.” But what you really need to know is whether you can picture yourself there. What does the room actually feel like? What are the architectural details? Where is the light? What could you do with the space?

That’s what I was looking for when I photographed Rockwood Women’s Club in Santa Barbara.

The Best Part About an Empty Wedding Venue

As a photographer, I’m always looking at a venue a little differently than a couple might. The first thing I notice is the light. Where is it coming from? What happens when the sun moves? Are there little pockets of good light that would be perfect for portraits? What parts of the room are going to look amazing once people actually fill it?

Then I start looking at the details.

The architecture. The windows. The doors. The way the rooms connect. All the little things that are going to end up quietly showing up in your wedding photos.

Is Rockwood Women’s Club a Good Santa Barbara Wedding Venue?

If you’re looking for a Santa Barbara wedding venue that feels historic, intimate, and a little less cookie-cutter, I think Rockwood is worth checking out. Especially if you don’t want your wedding to feel like it could have happened anywhere. There’s something really nice about getting married somewhere that actually feels connected to Santa Barbara. And if you’re still venue hunting, I would absolutely go see a space in person before making a decision. Photos can only tell you so much.
