Santa Barbara Engagement Photography: Couples Beach Session with Linda Kahle

Engagement season is about to hit the Central Coast, and I have been busy photographing couples in love.

We met at Shoreline Park and hiked down the cliff to see the sandstone cliffs along this stretch of coast start to glow. This is more of a local beach for chill surfing, but I LOVE it here because we can get actual shade.

Hardip and Sumi came to me wanting a beach session. Their last photos together were taken up in Vancouver, BC [ grey skies, heavy coats], and they were ready for something warmer.

The session

I describe my style as cinematic. I am very directive and, instead of posing, will give you little games to play to capture real laughter and vibes while pulling back against a dramatic, unbelievable backdrop.

What they wore

Hardip and Sumi both chose creams, whites, and soft neutrals, and it worked beautifully against the sandstone and the dry coastal scrub.

If you’re planning a beach session on the Santa Barbara coast, that’s the direction I’d point you: soft neutrals, creams, warm whites, muted earth tones. The cliffs here are warm-toned, the light at golden hour is warm, and neutral clothing lets the two of you stay the focus. Skip bold patterns, large logos, and anything neon. Bring a second outfit if you want range; there’s usually time, though nowhere private to change, so make a game plan for that. Want to get in the water? I am SO down. But we will save that for last because your hair will get wet.

Planning your own Santa Barbara beach engagement session

A few things I’ve learned shooting this coastline:

Go at golden hour. The last 30 minutes before sunset, year-round. Midday sun on an open beach is unkind to everyone.

Check the tide before you book the time. A low tide opens up wet sand, tide pools, and rock formations you simply can’t reach at high tide. It genuinely changes what the session can be.

Best months. [Late Fall to early Spring. It’s still quite hot in September]

Give it sixty minutes. Enough time to relax into it, change outfits, and follow the light down to the water.
